Snidely Whiplash Costume

If you want to dress in a Snidely Whiplash costume, you will need to put it together yourself. I will show you what you need to complete your outfit.

Snidely (sometimes misspelled as Snidley or Snydley) is the quintessential bad guy. As such, it should come as no surprise that he dresses mainly in black. His appearance is pretty much what you would have seen in silent movies, meaning you would know immediately that he is a villain just by looking at him.

This means that you might already have several of the items needed to put together your own costume for Snidely Whiplash. Even if you don’t, that’s okay. The items needed are pretty easy to find. This is good because there is no complete costume, but just enough to get you what you need if Snidely is among your favorite characters from The Rocky and Bullwinkle Show.

Black Suit

The clothing worn by Snidely were all black. Black pants, black shirt, black socks, black shoes (ignore the white shirt in the image above). Although there is no way to know, I suspect that he even wore black underwear!

Villain Moustache

The moustache (or mustache, as some people like to spell it) for a Snidely Whiplash costume is a black handlebar style.

Stove Pipe Hat

You will also need a hat for your costume. Ignore the hat seen in the image above for the mustaches. That is not the right hat for Snidely. The hat you want is a stove pipe hat, sometimes called a stove top hat. If you are unsure what that is, it is the kind of hat that President Lincoln wore, and looks like the pipe that came out of the top of stoves back before there was electricity. The taller the hat you can find, the more accurate it will look, but don’t worry if you prefer to go with a shorter hat.

The brim of the hat worn by Snidely in the Rocky and Bullwinkle cartoons is flat. However, almost every stove pipe hat found today has the brim curled up either on the sides or all the way around. It is okay if you get a hat with a curled brim. I highly doubt anyone is going to call you out on that fact.

Rope

The only accessory that you might want to carry around with you is rope. Snidely’s main crime was the chronic kidnapping of Nell Fenwick, girlfriend of hero Dudley Do-Right. Nell was the typical damsel in distress who constantly needed to be saved.Snidely would take Nell to the closest railroad tracks and tie her to the tracks with his rope. Just be sure you don’t actually tie anyone to a railroad track. Seriously. Don’t do it.

Snidely's Catch Phrase

Snidely Whiplash is a lot like Bug’s Bunny’s Wile E. Coyote. He tries to outwit the good guy – Dudley Do Right – but he never succeeds. If you want to properly sound like Snidely as you go about your Halloween festivities, you will need to say, “Curses! Foiled again,” any time someone outwits or captures you. No actual bad language is needed. This particular villain does not stoop to cursing.
